Well, discovered is not the best word: I was always a fan of garage rock, I was just a little too young to know much about the revival scene. I never appreciated the resulting madchester/baggy thing (though it didn't arrive until later). It lacked what I liked about the punk, hardcore and, eventually, garage scenes.

My fondness for bands so clearly looking back to find inspiration in the music I loved as a kid drove my record-collecting habit. Finding the records I wanted required traveling to different cities to find and explore record stores. When Ebay arrived in the mid90s, it was untrustworthy new, too expensive later on. Nothing beats visiting record stores and finding what you've been looking for. I suppose I began finding excuses to travel to find records. For example, I visited my brother in Kansas City, MO, as often as I could to see him and visit, the now closed, Music Exchange, which was one of my favorite record stores in the country. Now, my records sit in a storage facility while I travel to, well, travel.

I think I first heard C86 a couple of years after it came out. Although it's hard to remember if I heard the tape before seeing some of the bands on MTV. I certainly didn't hear them on the radio. But now I'm thinking about how I collect records and inspiration.

I so clearly heard The Who, for example, inspiring punk. I so clearly understood the motivation in the hardcore scene that it seemed natural for me to join in, though I never fully embraced straight-edge culture. I was still young enough when I heard this tape, that I had to go digging for the inspiration for the bands. I wanted to know where the music came from, especially bands like The Pastels. This led to thinking more about production than I had before. It's probably why I buy so many records: I'm always looking for the source of the sound. It's the same sort of search I'm doing in my literary work, I guess.

I know I'm not alone in this. It was a pleasant moment this afternoon when I read Music Ruined My Life's post on The Soup Dragon's "Whole Wide World" and C86. I appreciate there are many useful ways to narrate how I got from the late 80s to where I am today--and that it would be a shame not to see how music has affected my journey.

And I've been arguing about scenes and inclusion lately with folks in Seoul. It's always been weird for me. My mind and heart is always focused on music in general, with scenes that usually have nothing to do with each other. You could find me at the symphony, hip hop, jazz, or hardcore shows in a single week not too long ago. No matter what I collect, I'm at heart a punk who loves hardcore and a dedicated fan of garage punk and rock. The two scenes don't often mix and both require the sort of dedication that limits participation of others that I don't always like, but it's the only two in which I feel comfortably at home.

That said, the garage scene often becomes over-focused on fashion over substance and is every five years or so over-run with new-but-hipster fans who think it's a fad and pretend to adore it while posing for photos and playing dress up with their friends. That's the mode it's currently in both here and the US. Fortunately, there's always the hardcore scene where it's not too hard to find folks who simply refuse to tolerate the budding capitalists that attempt to destroy whatever they touch for profit.

I'm loving the antifa scene, currently. It's been growing on me for awhile. I have to admit, it's completely social and political and little to do with the actual music. But this is for another post.

Here's some C86 info and the track listing:
Side one

Primal Scream - "Velocity Girl"
The Mighty Lemon Drops - "Happy Head"
The Soup Dragons - "Pleasantly Surprised"
The Wolfhounds - "Feeling So Strange Again"
The Bodines - "Therese"
Mighty Mighty - "Law"
Stump - "Buffalo"
Bogshed - "Run to the Temple"
A Witness - "Sharpened Sticks"
The Pastels - "Breaking Lines"
Age of Chance - "From Now On, This Will Be Your God"

Side two

The Shop Assistants - "It's Up to You"
Close Lobsters - "Firestation Towers"
Miaow - "Sport Most Royal"
Half Man Half Biscuit - "I Hate Nerys Hughes (From The Heart)"
The Servants - "Transparent"
The Mackenzies - "Big Jim (There's no pubs in Heaven)"
Big Flame - "New Way (Quick Wash And Brush Up With Liberation Theology)"
Fuzzbox - "Console Me"
McCarthy - "Celestial City"
The Shrubs - "Bullfighter's Bones"
The Wedding Present - "This Boy Can Wait"

<category scheme='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#' term='L.A. To make matters worse, there seems to be an earlier band The Key Boys who were known by their fans as The Korean Beatles. This is not that band.

I want to find the lyrics to this song and more about the second Key Boys. When I do, I'll post the info here. "Let's go to the Sea Shore" sounds to me like it is in the 노래운동 (norae undong : song movement) tradition that was very popular in Korea from the late sixties until the early eighties and served to give voice to people's concerns under the oppressive military governments of 박정희 (Park Jeong-hee) and 전두환 (Jeon Doo-hwan). Korean protest songs are also known as "민중 가요" (minjung gayo : people's song).

I like Broken Deer. I accidently stumbled into a Flat Duo Jets show in Florida in 1989 after jumping the back fence of a bar in Orlando. I was 19. I was an instant fan. Crow was playing drums with concrete blocks placed in front to keep his kit from moving while he played. Dex was swinging, jumping, gyrating his way through each song all the while refusing to look at the audience, not talking between songs. It was all about the songs. I was absolutely stunned. The last time I saw them was in the mid90s. Dex has my Psychotronic Encyclopedia of Film, believe it or not. I was living behind a gas station on 6th & Washington in Denver. They crashed at my place after a show. I'm seventeen years old and have been a fan for five years.
What a fucking little consumer that kid is. (Oh and the responses are priceless, too.)

I love how fans attempt to dictate what an artist produces. I want. I want. I want. Oh man. How about waking up to the fact that we learn this behavior as consumers in a capitalist market: to make demands that a product of somebody else's labor conform to our expectations, a device also quite capable controlled and manipulated by market forces. Naive crap from America's youth: I have been a fan for five years...oh shut the fuck up, kid.

I love the humor in Anton's newest work and the craftsmanship. I mean watch the video for Golden-Frost. It's fucking hilarious and serious all at once. Beautiful when something can exist as a multiplicity.

Well, come to think of it, I also enjoy the performance. Why all the fans commenting on the performance aspect of his work as "negative." I think he's speaking to us. More than I can say for many musicians.

BJM on myspace.

Anton, whatever you do -- keep it evil.

Jakobinarina: This is an Advertisment

Rough Trade's Top 100 for 2007

ROUGH TRADE SHOPS ALBUM OF THE YEAR 2007

ALELA DIANE - THE PIRATES GOSPEL

If you imagine a continuum from the Carter family to Gillian Welch and ending up near Joanna Newsom, then this album falls between all these: rural rather than country, but not rednecked; ancient and modern.. Still playing it now after having it for a year, and you can't say more than that.

ROUGH TRADE SHOPS ALBUM OF THE YEAR 2007

PATRICK WATSON -CLOSE TO PARADISE - This record spans experimental noise, cabaret guitar / piano pop, stripped down gospel, new orleans jazz, walls of noise and Beatles-like melodies.with a voice that sounds like the lovechild of Jeff Buckley and Nina Simone and instrumentation like a Balkans funeral waltz through Gotham City - as played by a 36 piece chamber orchestra it heralds the arrival of a major new talent.

PANDA BEAR - PERSONPITCH - A firm favourite in both Rough Trade Shops, that crosses all musical boundaries, when asked what this record sounds like Chris replied simple. take The Beatles 'White Album' and The Beach boys 'Pet Sounds' and it would sound like this...with owls.

WEST COAST - STUDIO - Two Scandinavians took elements of disco, krautrock , madchester, Lindstrom and The Cure and threw them back wrapped in a huge cosmic psychedelic masterpiece of a record. No.we didn't think it would work either.but it does. in spades.

MIRACLE FORTRESS - FIVE ROSES - The debutalbum from Miracle Fortress is an album that you will fall in love with instantly. If Arcade Fire's Win Butler didn't have the weight of the world on his shoulders, loved The Beach Boys, sang beautiful harmonies and let Brian Eno produce, he might be capable of something as graceful and uplifting as Miracle Fortress's debut.

BURIAL - UNTRUE - Burialreturns with 'Untrue', a new record of weird soul music, which lovingly processes spectral female voices into vaporised r&b. It continues with the debut's crackle-drenched yearning and bustling syncopations, haunted by the ghosts of rave, but also reveals a new upbeat energy. Huge crossover potential here ala Portishead or Massive Attack. A record to truely immerse yourself in.

LCD SOUNDSYSTEM -SOUND OF SILVER - After the dancefloor destruction of the first LCD set, James Murphy returns with Kraftwerk, Joy Division and Carl Craig all exploding out of these NYC built grooves, features some of his finest songwriting and production yet.

WOODEN SHJIPS -WOODEN SHJIPS - Weed may have had something to do with the making of this record. juggernaut riffs, magic, smoke, psychedelia, repetition, volume and warmth, with a sound that evokes suicide, Loop, Spacemen 3, Guru Guru, The Velvet Underground and The Doors. Astonishing.

BATTLES - MIRRORED -This band features ex members of Don Cab and Helmet and offer post rock electronics from the future for you to enjoy now. These guys are musical mathematicians. You have never heard anything so complicated be so soulful and so much fun.

M.I.A - KALA - Who eversaid 'difficult second album' didn't bank on Mia's skills. That you should sing the songs that make you happy or sad as the case maybe, there are plenty of songs that make me cry, I can tell you. I've always loved those songs and each of the songs that I've written, although there are different types of song, have come from that love of music. Real singing music I should say not that opera stuff, although I do like some of those operatic arias. I do prefer simpler songs with melodies and good words. But as Enrico Caruso said, after he had become a great singer, you have to have a big mouth, a big chest, a lot of hard work, and something in the heart.

Here is his version of "Teddy Bears' Picnic". I'll take the originals over the re-issues anyday.

The Everly Brothers:

The Everly Brothers (Cadence, 1958, CLP3003)

Very Rare in this great condition

Beat 'n Soul (Warner Bros, 1965, mono, W1605)

Two Yanks in England (Warner Bros, 1966, sterea, W1646)

Patsy Cline. Sentimentally Yours (Decca, 1962, DL4282)

Edith Piaf. The Unknown Edith Piaf (Philips, 1965, mono, PCC 217, gatefold w/ booklet)

Cheap Trick. S/T (Epic, 1977, PE3440)

Dave Clark Five. I Like it Like That (Epic, 1965, LN24178)

Like many DC5 albums I find in Denver, the jacket is shit and the vinyl is excellent. Very happy that my fave single, "Hold Tight," is present. Very happy that Tarrantino made wonderful use of it in Death Proof. (In addition, thrilled somebody finally used Joe Tex.)

More pop than Freakbeat, but extremely hook-y tunes. Something to clap your hands to as you stomp around your room. Will fit in nicely with my Burn Out sets. Should get 'em dancing.

Ex-cop Dave Dee (Harman) was at the scene of the auto accident that left Eddie Cochran dead. He returned Cochran's guitar to his family. The band, like many British acts, spent time playing in Hamburg, Germany; they disbanded in 1969.

In the US, the band's Greatest Hits peaked on the Billboard Albums Charts at 155 during 1967. I especially appreciated the addition of the children's choir singing chorus in songs like "No Dancing". The art direction is also pleasing: I am crazy for the colors blue and grey, lightning, and wild cheetah cats.

Now, Dongs of Sevotion, released the following year was not all that 1999 offered. Nevertheless, some of my favorite Callahan songs are present in this gatefold, 4 side release--one of which, "Bloodflow", really belongs with the prior year's entry.

DagTracks: "Justice Aversion", "Dress Sexy at My Funeral", and "Bloodflow".

Elephant's Memory . Songs from Midnight Cowboy
(Buddah Records, 1969, BDS 5038)

Found this recently after a trip to Boulder's Bart's CD Cellar, which has a wonderful, second-floor vinyl shop. Record, sleeve, and cover all in excellent condition. Elephant's Memory are known less for being Carly Simon's first band than for backing John Lennon and Yoko Ono. Nevertheless, a great find; I often come across their first album in, at best, good condition; in other words, well-worn. EM's second album is really more like a re-issue of their first.

A couple of their songs ended up in the soundtrack for Midnight Cowboy; I suppose Neil Bogart (who penned the liner notes for the lp) figured Buddah might cash in on EM's potential fame. Riches and fame never materialized. Yet, the record is a great testament to the band's optimism, experimentalism, and talent. In addition, it is an odd lp from Buddah Records: with Buddah, think bubble-gum bands such as 1910 Fruitgum Co and The Ohio Express not folksie, rocksie, psyche-tinged & hipster-swayed, New York rock experiments. Plenty of organs and horns. This record is a lot of fun.

DagTracks: "Midnight Cowboy", "Don't Put Me On Trial", "Super Heep", "Band of Love", and "Takin' a Walk".

Eloy . Inside
(Orig. released in 1973; my copy: US release on Janus Records, 1974, JLS 3062)

Eloy, from what I have read, was one of the most popular German bands during the 1970s. Inside is Eloy's second release and the beginning of their serious prog rock ambitions.

Think of The Nice's 1967 "Thoughts of Emerlist Davjack" and 1969 self-titled release with Eloy's "Inside" stuck in the middle for a good progressive sandwich.

DagTrack: "Land of No Body".

Todd Rundgren . A Wizard, A True Star
(Bearsville, 1973, 0598)

I had been feverishly looking for the source material sampled in one of Negativland's published "Over the Edge" broadcasts from KPFA. I think it might have been from Pastor Dick's Moribund Music of the 70s. I cannot clearly recall nor can I find the old tapes. (SIGH.)

I had been feverishly looking for the source material for some time. And I found it on this early Rundgren experiment on his Bearsville label. A listener must be in the mood for Rundgren's mixing, splicing, sampling, and straining of various genres from pop to vaudeville. I absolutely love this album. And the source material for the Negativland loop is from the beginning of "International Feel".

That Wizard comes after the his super-successful (commercially and critically) Something/Anything? makes the album much more cherishable. It's like a middle finger to the market and a welcome-warming embrace of art and performance. Some of Rundgren's experiments don't really make for entertaining listening, but this record is worth the effort and labor it takes to get into the mix.

DagTrack: Side 1 in its entirety, beginning to end.

Quatermass . S/T
(Harvest, gatefold lp, 1970, SKAO-314)

I was proud of this find; an often sought rarity from the Harvest label. My interest was focused after reading Record Collector's issue on Harvest releases (MAR2006, Issue 326, "Pink Floyd & the Golden Years of Harvest".) Now, I do realize mine is the US release of the Harvest record. But I am still beaming after finding it at a recent outing to Black & Read, Inc.

Quatermass is John Gustafson, Pete Robinson, and Mick Underwood. Their self-titled and sole lp is a brilliant prog rock record that fit well into my listening today, esp. with Eloy. I highly recommend this record. As every critic notes, Quatermass is like a genius offspring of The Nice and Deep Purple.

DagTrack: "Black Sheep of the Family". (Fitting title, since this album was both a first and last album, and all critics cannot help but review the songs without mentioning more commercially successful progressive and hard rock outfits. Don't be fooled by the hard rock outfit, Quatermass II. They're just not the same. )

And a couple new 45s:

I have been buying more 45s lately and with great results. More on all of my 45 purchases in future entries. Inter Milan is playing Lazio on Fox Soccer Channel. INTER! I have to run.

Doris Willingham. "You Can't Do That" b/w "Lost Again". Jay Boy 45-6001. Promo Copy.
Danny Woods. "Come On & Dance, PtII" b/w "To Be Loved". Smash S-2140.
The South Street Soul Guitars. "Poppin' Popcorn" b/w "Soul Fire".
